A desire for unity now that the shoe is on the other foot

Strange. With the potential win for Vice President Joe Biden, the world gets to see many of his supporters ecstatic – some even dancing in the streets. With their candidate leading unofficial results for electoral votes, there is a clear change in their messaging.

Instead of the anger, sadness, anger, and outright violence that was the hallmark of the left, there is now hopes of unity and moving forward.

Unfortunately, politics have all the same nature as a pendulum – what swung in one direction will most likely continue in the opposite direction. And so the most appropriate behavior is the same standards you yourselves created.

The right however tends to over-focus on more “civilized” behaviors, and it is likely that many in the right will embrace a “turn the other cheek” approach in the hopes that by behaving civil today, there is better hope for a more civil tomorrow.

The questions that needs to be asked are as follows:

  • Do both sides truly respect one another? If not, then such asymmetry will lead to one dominating the other long-term.
  • Does the behavior of 1 side establish precedent?
  • When the other side gains/loses power again what is their likely behavior going to be? In light of this, how should one behave?
